Majors Can't Slow Down Hot Hitting Panthers, Settle for Runner Up at SCAC Tournament
MILLINGTON, Tenn. – The Millsaps Majors Baseball Team came into USA Stadium on Sunday with a chance to win a SCAC Championship, as they had to win two games over the Birmingham-Southern Panthers to claim the trophy. However, it was not the Majors day, as the Panthers were not going to be stopped, as they were able to defeat Millsaps and claim their first SCAC Title.
Millsaps opened the scoring as Stephen Gates led the game off with a single and junior Wes Perkins drove him in with a RBI double to left to make it a 1-0 game. BSC responded in the bottom of the first with eight runs in the inning to take command early.
A worn out Major pitching staff could not slow down the Panthers bats as they pulled away throughout the game, scoring one run in each of the first five innings and five in the fifth. The Majors got one in the third thanks to a RBI from junior Jules Roussel, a run in the fifth thanks to a RBI from Zemke, and another run in the seventh thanks to a RBI from Roussel, but in the end, BSC prevailed 21-4.
Perkins led the way offensively, going 3-for-4 with a RBI while Zemke and Gates added two hits each. Despite going 0-for-4, Roussel drove in two RBIs on the afternoon. Junior Will Edwards took the loss for Millsaps.
The Majors conclude their season at 28-16 as they say goodbye to eight outstanding seniors in Jules Roussel, Ryan Zemke, Drew Leonard, Drew Respess, Alex Granier, Tanner Woodson, Andrew Evans, and Jordan Nolan. The Majors will return to action next season as they will compete in the Southern Athletic Association.
